Loss and Remembrance - for voices, computer processing and computer-controlled pipe organ
Presented as part of Present, a Concert of New and Contemporary Music for Treble Voices
Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA (2018)

Suffering and happiness, pain and joy, loss and remembrance; sometimes thought of as opposing forces, these powerful energies are deeply intertwined and in many ways define each other. Through loss, we have the opportunity to more fully understand the richness and complexity of life. Through loss and acceptance of the ephemeral nature of life, can we find additional motivation to be present in every moment? Deepest gratitude to Stephanie Council and the members of the Mount Holyoke College Glee Club for breathing life into this collaborative project. This piece is dedicated to my mentor and friend, Pauline Oliveros (1932–2016) and to my loving mother, Beverly Williams (1937–2017). More broadly, this sonic meditation is offered to all who have experienced the pain of loss and the bittersweet joy of remembrance.
